Coaching and Mentoring (FIF) West Essex

Open Door has been commissioned by Essex County Council Family Innovation Fund to provide: Coaching (14yrs+) and Mentoring (8yrs+) as an early intervention with the purpose of improving outcomes by reducing and/or preventing:

  • Negative behaviour
  • Risky behaviour
  • Aggressive behaviour
  • The breakdown of relationships
  • Social isolation

An intervention will be provided where it has been identified that:

  • The dynamics of the family are adversely affected by an individual member
  • That children/young people and/or parents/carers are displaying early on the dynamics of the family.
  • An individual is feeling disconnected from local networks of support.

Coaching is an outcome focussed way of helping young people.  It offers the continued encouragement to develop new skills, challenge existing assumptions and attitudes, to celebrate success and address any personal barriers and problems that may be stopping them from succeeding. Coaching provides the opportunity for young people to think about their options, progress and succeed, building confidence and self esteem along the way.

Mentoring provides a positive role model who can work with the young troubling them. It involves matching the young person with a trained mentor who shares similar interest or experiences and has a good understanding of the issues the mentee may be facing. It affords the mentee a sounding board and the opportunity to discuss their situation and think about practical options, develop a plan and achieve success. The mentoring relationship is a special one which can help build confidence and esteem, ensuring the mentee feels listened to and understood.
